So everything is screwed, you're probably gonna be 1 hero + a few friends vs HUGE NUMBERS OF FACTIONS OF EVERYBODY who hates each other. Sounds epic, I'm interested.

Actually, one scenario I can see is Gwen being the one who triggers it - after the characters are either dead or too old to fight. That might even be a nice benefit for people who inherit Legendary Defender of Ascalon or who inherit a Gwen statue through the Hall of Fellowship - recognition in that area.

It's having it being done by Adelburn - and, by extension, within Adelburn's remaining lifetime - that seems devalueing.

I was really hoping Ascalon would be rebuilt and I could get that pre-searing feeling. I'll buy the game, but fi I can't save Ascalon I'll most likely go back to WoW and protect Stormwind.

A war-torn world is all very good but it gets dull. I need a human stronghold. I presume the only safe place in the world will be Kryta, and probably it will serve as the heroes home, and a pre-searing like place. At least it will be safe, every hero needs a sanctuary.

A rebuilt Ascalon would make a perfect fit for a human Kingdom. Kryta just doesn't feel like it, it's too exotic. PreSearing Ascalon made a lot of people fall in love with GW, completely abandoning it in GW2 seems like a bad move.

So basically, nothing that we've ever done did any good.

Tell you what, I'd like to build a time machine, go back to Elona, ally with Palawa Joko, become Undead, kill all my heroes and THEN go defeat Abaddon with Reversal of Damage and Weapon of Remedy. I'd be in a perfect position to be "alive" in GW2, and in control of the whole continent of Elona.

I don't have the article myself, but please, if someone can, enlighten me:

-We'll forget for a second that you can't divert a river that flows south so that it flows north instead; why would Palawa Joko even WANT the Crystal Desert to become a lush and fertile landscape? He's Undead, he's not a kitten. Wow.

-How can it be remotely possible that the White Mantle are still around over 200 years after their Mursaat leaders were exposed as false gods? Livia even gets her hands on the Scepter of Orr (somehow), and you KNOW she's gonna use it against them sometime between now and then. It's just not even legitimately possible that they're still fighting back.

-This one isn't even a question: There is no possible way that the shithole that is Kaineng's sprawling city somehow produces an army capable of soundly defeating the combined might of the VERY battle-honed Luxons and Kurzicks. Come on, seriously.

-So only 60 measly years after the order of whispers saves the world from a deranged god and helps bring Kormir to divinity, the ENTIRETY of the Sunspear Order is nearly gone? What?

-There are a lot of different questions I could ask about the Charr, but I won't bother. They have a long way to go to explain why the Charr would still be invading the wasteland that is Ascalon over 200 years later. And as far as Adlebern goes... what is this guy, like a billion years old? Gtfo.

-Why do you strive so hard to "make up" your "own races"? Seriously, you can just call the Sylvari Elves, and the Charr Orcs, and the Asura Goblins (or Gnomes I suppose, if you wanted), and the Norn Vikings. No one would care. If you're not going to do that, you should come up with a new name for the Undead and then pretend you invented reanimated skeletons that have personalities.

Please ANet, for your sake: do something right.

Maybe it's like that Anet has meaning to make this Tyria into land of confusion. Canthan characters choose between Imperial or Kurzick/Luxon and Kurzick/Luxons are trying to take over Emperor or there will be traitor as Emperors friend and pull Shiro Tagachis.

How about Ebon Vanguard? I hope they have built some stronghold around Eye of the North and ascalonian players starts plan to conquer Charr homelands and rebuild Ascalon and Charr players try to look for Ebon Vanguard and slay 'em all.

Norns keep their hunting and they can have some new threat, like those Dredges, who just got pissed off that they got enslaved by Dwarves and show, whos the boss.

About Sylvari and Asura, I dont know. Perhaps they will unite and build some Utopia and play polymock and invent new stuff.

Then, Elona. Has Ossa clan died? Next Ossa can lead remaining free Sunspears/Kournan Rebels/Centaurs and pull new Battle of Jahai

Maybe this game's story just depends on us. Who knows..

A video game does not need an epic and innovative story. It needs a working story. This one is however so full of cliché and could have been written by a school dropout.

ANet never managed to create a really meaningful storyline in their more linear, mission based GW1 chapters.

GW2 is going to be more MMORPGish with its larger instances and stuff, but the background lore does not give me much hope that we will have strong characters to breathe life into this world. This might work for a Diablo style game, but the more you go MMO, you have to deliver more substantial things than this stuff that you can rightfully totally ignore and give a damn about when playing the game.

Off topic.
For those, who don't like upcoming GW2.

Anet is just trying to develop game for your joy and this is what they get back?! Just unsatisfied whining! In fantasy, everythings possible! If you don't like it, quit!

According to the feedback they have been getting lately, it doesn't look like they have the joy of the players in mind.

If you don't like people speaking their minds about a game they want to see succeed, quit visiting fan forums.

Not everything happens 250 years after EotN. I would say this happens a few years after the Great Destroyers defeat. And since the Charr have been attacking Ascalon since the searing i dont see how it doesnt make sense as to why they would be invading it.

There are whiners for everything. If Anet tried to satisfy them all this game would be hell. Hopefully by GW2 the people who have stated they will not be getting it due to storyline, skill balances, pve skills, titles or whatever everyones complaining about today, will have stuck to their word.

I see no problem with this storyline at all. If all is well at the beginning of GW2 then we are right back where we started. Seems like people expected Tyria to be a world of rainbows and carebears in GW2.

And thanks Mordakai for posting this . Most of the other posts on this dont seem to be as detailed.

They truly messed up the original lore with GW:EN, and now it's all going to pieces in GW2. Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall actually made sense - even though their stories weren't great, the lore all fitted together. Then GW:EN came along.

Here's what went wrong:

A couple of earthquakes brought a race of gnome-bunnies we'd never heard of out of the ground. They were powerful with magic... just like gnomes in WoW. There also turned out to be a race of half-giant Vikings that we'd never heard of.

And just how was the Ebon Vanguard able to go north after the Searing, while the rest of Ascalon sheltered south of the wall... when we, the heroes, were fighting to save those people, they somehow slipped past unnoticed, and ventured further north than we were ever able to, into the Far Shiverpeaks?

None of the new areas were connected to the old world of Tyria. This made the entire expansion seem oddly distanced from the original world. They were all ideally placed to be linked up to old Tyria - the Tarnished Coast with the Maguuma Jungle, the Charr homelands with Ascalon, the Far Shiverpeaks with the North Shiverpeaks (if you look closely on the map, it appears there may actually have been a plan to do so - from the northeast corner of Iron Horse Mine, to Ice Cliff Chasms). The Verdant Cascades could even have been connected to Kryta, but instead, there is a vast green emptiness in the middle of the map.

Considering that the Great Dwarf was the god of the dwarves, we would assume he was reasonably large and powerful, like the human gods. Therefore, we would also assume that his rival, the Great Destroyer, was reasonably large and powerful. He turned out to be a bone dragon that could be killed in about 20 seconds.

Now, we find out that the Great Destroyer was just a general of some big dragon sleeping underground, who has decided to wake up with his friends and cause more cataclysmic geographical changes. Haven't we had enough of those already?

And a massive river is suddenly 'dammed' by that undead guy we should have killed, so that it goes in the opposite direction. Perhaps it should have flowed north to begin with - if you look at the water in-game in some places, it's moving completely the wrong way.

One more thing: wasn't this game called "Guild Wars", or something? Where on earth is the relevance of that now? If it's going to be more relevant in Guild Wars 2, may I ask how exactly, with all these playable races? Will we have to join guilds of our characters' race, and wage war against the others? Well, wouldn't that be original!

I'm not saying that the new lore should be more realistic. I'm saying that it is disappointing to see the well-structured original lore fall apart in favor of the new races (of which all but one we had never even heard of before GW:EN).

For those that tried to make sense of Guild Wars lore, and thought beyond it, there can only be disappointment in these changes. What was once believable, respectable, well inter-connected lore - albeit with some background missing - has turned into an utter shambles. Hail the age of the gnome-bunnies, for the humans have fallen.

Actually, this has happened naturally in the past. I don't remember what year, but an earthquake caused the Mississippi river to run backwards in places and change its course in several places creating lakes. Lake Chicot in southeast Arkansas is one that comes to mind. So, it is possible, and in a magical fantasy world, I'm sure it can be pulled off.

Also, the Crystal Desert used to be an inland sea before it dried up.

So it's possible with the elevation of the surrounding land, he could block it at it's source and turn it around?

People are getting to worried about this. tbh I think whatever is going on at arenanet with guildwars 2 i'm sure they are doing an excelent job. We are talking about Anet here guys. People are moaning saying "I'm not gonna buy GW2 it sounds rubbish" even when we know little of what it looks like and how it will play. Anet are the same people who made GW1 the game we all fell in love with at first, so if they have done it before they are perfectly if not more capable of doing it again. Yes Anet have made there fair share of mistakes in GW1 but this only means that they know how to make GW2 even better. I feel confident about GW2 whatever the outcome because I know that Anet are only doing it to try and please there fans. Trust me around 90% of the people saying that they hate the sound of GW2 and they are not going to buy it will change their mind when a reasonable amount of information is released. you can disagree with me and say you think different but I truly think your opinion will change drastically when GW2 is close to hitting our shelves.

Irony is that Diablo series lore is deep and consistent. Hell, its good enough to support stuff like books and comic books.

I wonder, is there anyone who really likes gw2 settings?

I feel alienated by it. Kinda like when Searing happened, but now it happened to everywhere.
